According to Bloomberg Businessweek Best Buy the electronics chain popular in the US is closing its stores in China in favor of opening 40-50 higher end Five Star stores it acquired locally in 2006. A sign that brands don’t simply translate.
Having lived in Silicon Valley for 17 years and enjoyed shopping at the much more geekier Fry’s Electronics stores I always thought Best Buy was the electronics store for uninformed America. And people in China treat their electronics as a status symbol, to which the commodities sold at Best Buy don’t lend themselves well.
